| How to Whiten Your Teeth
Using Veneers |
| by Louise Forrest |
| |
When thinking
about whitening your teeth, home whitening kits or a trip
to the dentist are usually the first things which pop into
your mind. However, there is another way to whiten the teeth,
and that is by having veneers fitted. |
| |
| What Are Veneers? |
Veneers are
usually thin shells of porcelain and they are attached to
the outside of the teeth. They can be used to whiten the teeth,
fill gaps in the teeth, and even to straighten the teeth.
They are generally used when people do not only want to whiten
the teeth, but when they want a complete teeth makeover.
Overall veneers produce extremely natural results and they
do not damage much of the natural teeth compared to other
whitening methods.
The only downside to them really, is their cost! Having veneers
usually requires two trips to the dentist and each tooth generally
costs around $700-$1,200, which can turn out to be extremely
expensive if you want all of your teeth doing! |
| |
| How the Procedure is Performed
and the Advantages and Disadvantages of Having Veneers |
The veneers
are actually stuck onto the teeth using a special type of
glue. This makes the procedure less painful than a lot of
other teeth whitening procedures. In order to make the veneer
feel as comfortable and natural as possible, a little section
of the natural tooth surface is removed. Then, in order to
make sure that the right sized veneers are used, impressions
of the natural teeth are taken. This is all done on the first
visit to the dentist. |
| |
On your second
visit to the dentist to have the procedure done, you will
have your teeth polished and cleaned before the veneers are
actually fitted. Obviously it takes time to create the veneers,
which is why two visits to the dentist are required. |
| |
The advantages
of having veneers over other whitening methods include: |
 |
They have a long life span. Most whitening procedures last
a couple of years at the most. However, veneers tend
to last around five to ten years, with some even lasting
for fifteen years! |
 |
Most of the natural
teeth are left untouched and are not as damaged as they
could have been through other procedures. |
 |
As well as enhancing
the teeth’s appearance, veneers can also protect
the teeth, especially older ones, from becoming damaged. |
 |
They are not just
used for teeth whitening; they can also improve other
teeth problems and therefore enhance your confidence
and giving you a true ‘Hollywood smile’.
|
|
| |
The disadvantages
to Veneers include: |
 |
If you do not take care of the veneers, they can easily break
and snap off. Hard chewing and biting down on things
can contribute to this, so always be careful when eating! |
 |
The procedure
is extremely expensive and not everybody has that kind
of money |
 |
Although
most of the natural teeth are left untouched, part of
them does still have to be removed. |
 |
The veneers
can only ever be as strong as the material underneath
them so they may not necessarily protect the teeth. |
