Photodermatitis
by Louise Forrest

Do you know what this is? It is another skin condition caused by the UV rays from the sun.

What photodermatitis is a skin condition that has had a severe reaction to the UV rays from the sun. UV rays are classified by their wavelength, and you generally suffer from photodermatitis when the wave length is at its highest or in simple terms when the sun is at its hottest.

It is also quite possible for some chemicals to trigger this condition, as there are many hundreds of chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis. As well as chemicals there are also certain allergies that can also trigger this condition.

But when it comes to the symptoms these vary from person to person but generally you will notice blisters that are very itchy or areas of the skin that have become raised. There are some cases when the condition is quite painful and you will also develop some flu like symptoms.

Also what type of skin you have can also have an impact as to whether you develop this condition. Studies have shown that people who have fair skin, red/blonde hair, those with green/blue eyes are generally more at risk than others, for whatever reason that may be.

What you should do is to avoid going out in the sun when it is at its highest. This tends to be in the early morning and also early afternoons.

If you have never had this condition then there is a very strong chance that you can prevent it from actually happening to you. Some simple steps involve staying out of the sun, and wearing a good sun cream at all times.

Should you develop the condition then there are some alternative ways to treat the condition. Generally all you need to is apply a cool dressing to the affected areas but your doctor may suggest other treatments depending on the severity of course.

Another form of treatment that you doctor may suggest is that you simply change the foods that you eat. Some foods that are good sources of fatty acids that can help to reduce the risk of developing the condition.

Whilst there is no one specific treatment, because will vary greatly from person to person. What will be a cure for one person will not always help another person. It is always best to seek advice from your doctor and to see what further treatments are available to you.
