Skin Care – The Facts about Sunbeds
by Louise Forrest

Getting an artificial tan by using a sunbed is popular these days. Many women, and more increasingly men, use sunbeds to give their skin a bronze look. But not everyone who uses sunbeds understands the facts, and knows if they are safe to use. A sunbed is not unlike many other inventions that enhance the aesthetic look of your body - there are pros and cons to using a sunbed.

Using a sunbed will guarantee that you will receive a tan, which is want most men and women are looking for. Using a sunbed to get a tan takes a short time, where as getting a natural tan will require you to lay out in the sun for hours on end. This is important in terms of skin care. Many of the sunbeds can give you a tan in only 10 minutes of use. You do not have to wait for warm weather or summertime to get a tan. A sunbed is always available no matter the weather or what time of year it is. Sunbeds are a comfortable way to get a tan whenever you want, but is skin care harmed by using sunbeds?

Sunbed Safety

One opinion holds that getting an artificial tan by using a sunbed is actually safer than getting a tan from the sun, but this is not the case. To get a tan with a sunbed, concentrated doses of ultraviolet radiation are used. This is the exact same type of radiation that the sun produces and prolonged exposure can cause cancer. The radiation also can cause the skin to age prematurely. The main difference between the radiation that the sun gives off and that sunbeds give off is that the sun’s radiation is much less concentrated. All of the radiation is centered on your skin when using a sunbed, which is why it takes less time to get a tan. The more you are exposed to ultraviolet radiation, the more likely it is you will develop skin cancer.

Most people who use sunbeds know this, but many think using them occasionally will not harm their skin. This is incorrect, as sunbeds are not good for skin care. The inside of the skin is damaged, which may lead other skin reactions. In the end, it may also lead to skin cancer. The skin has several functions being the largest organ on the human body. Since skin is on the outside of the body, and the first part to see exposure to anything, it can be damaged easier. Sunbeds directly cause damage to your skin because of the major amounts of radiation it exposes to your skin. Many skin care experts warn of the overuse of sunbeds.

Men and women have different skin-based reactions when they use a sunbed. Generally women take care of their body better than men do. More women visit tanning salons than men do but that is changing more and more. Both sexes want to have a year round tan and in most places in the country the only way to do this is by using a sunbed. But is your skin care worth the risk of having a tan?

A person should not overuse sunbeds. If a person goes and uses sunbeds every day, it can be very unhealthy, and their skin can begin to look aged and turn a brown color that looks unnatural. This look is not attractive, and it is very dangerous as well increasing the likelihood that you will get skin cancer. You should take care of your body and do not become obsessed with things that can cause harm to your body if not done in moderation. Skin care is important because not taking care of your skin can lead to diseases such as skin cancer.

There are pros and cons to using sunbeds, but overuse of them will increase the chance of the biggest con, which is skin cancer. A golden bronze skin is an attractive look on a man or woman but you must be aware of the risks to having it. Everybody’s skin is different and to find out how much you can use a sunbed without causing serious damage to your skin you should ask a physician, such as a dermatologist.
