Natural Skincare Using Olive Oil
by Louise Forrest

From the Mediterranean Basin originated olive, a traditional tree in the area. The tree crop is the source of olive oil, a type of oil obtained from the fruit of the olive. Olive oil has been widely used in many parts of the world as a basic ingredient in drugs, soaps, cosmetics and of course, cooking. In the Mediterranean, olive oil is also used as fuel for oil lamps that are traditional to the residents. Did you know that aside from the usual and known uses of olive oil, it is also an important part in numerous drug and pharmaceutical products? There are many natural skincare products that are being manufactured using the oil.

Olive oil has a unique composition that makes it a very useful element in many natural skincare products. The oil is very much known for having absorptive features especially the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Thus, there are many sun-screen products that include the oil in its active ingredients. Olive oil is also proven to be highly effective in slowing the metabolism rate of cells in the body, helping slow down the onset of aging process. It is soothing and has healing properties for all types of skin. As such, the oil is functioning as an effective relief for burns, dandruff, itch and stings and bites.

In the old times, olive oil was discovered as having been used by the ancient Egyptians some 5,000 years in the past. Originally, it was used as a base for massaging of the hair as well as of the body. Early Romans, Phoenicians and Greeks were known to have discovered the natural skincare properties of olive oil. In the old Arabia, the oil was primarily used in the manufacturing of moisturizers and soaps. Back to the current times, the oil has been tested and found to generously contain ample levels of vitamin E and other significant antioxidants.

To use olive oil an effective natural skincare, you should be familiarized with the different recommended uses of the plant. First, use it as a mask. As a natural skincare ingredient in such facial masks, the oil would help make the skin very smooth, hydrated and at times, elastic. Try combining an olive oil spoonful with some honey and egg yolk. Put the mask on the face and wash off after a few minutes.

As hair tonic, combine a spoonful of olive oil with two eggs. Apply the resulting solution to the hair and leave for about 30 minutes. After that, wash off the solution off the hair. See how olive oil has added shine and luster to the hair, making it more glowing and beautiful.

To make the skin glow better, add half a cup of olive oil to a solution of quarter cup vinegar and quarter cup water. Use it like a night cream. Clean the face before applying. You would see that your skin would glow more beautifully and it also would be softer and more moisturized.

Olive oil can make up for a great natural skincare regimen. The next time you use olive oil in your salad, see if you can spare some for your skincare regimen.
