Dangers with the Mani and Pedi
by Louise Forrest

They say that beauty is only skin deep, but this is not necessarily true. The truth is that beauty is often times in the eye of the beholder, and that is why you should always look at the total picture when deciding on a beauty regime. You would be surprised at how many people notice your fingers and your toes on a daily basis.

Your beauty routine should never stop at your face. When you take the time to have your finger and toenails done, you give off an impression of a well kempt individual that cares about the sum and not just the parts. However, you must be careful when you seek a professional to do your nails, do not jeopardize your health in order to be beautiful.

Not everyone has beautiful hands and feet, but when they are cut, colored, and the dead skin has been removed, they can look better than you would think. Many people choose to go to a professional salon in order to get a manicure and pedicure, but you should be aware that there is no spontaneity involved in a salon.

You must make an appointment ahead of time, and the cost is usually higher than if you go to a shop that specializes in nails. The salon route is typically for people who are on a set schedule. The benefit to having your nails done at a salon is that you can often times form a relationship with the person who does your fingers and feet, and when you are in a pinch, they can sometimes squeeze you in, although this takes money, time, and effort.

If you are someone who decides that you want to get your nails done on a whim, you may visit one of the many nail places that pop up all around on a daily basis. These salons are usually run by immigrants who work everyday, and many times on Sundays as well. The shops are relatively clean, and you can come on a walk in basis at a cheaper cost than if you were to go to a salon. However, if you decide to go this route, there are some things that you should be looking for before letting one of these shops do your nails.

First of all, there is a short amount of schooling in order to do just nails. When you get a cosmetology license, it will usually include hair, nails, and skin. However, the study of nails is relatively shorter, and there is not much involved. With that being said, the priority to anyone having his or her nails done should be sanitation. If you go into a salon and there is dirty water, you should leave immediately.

If you sit down in a pedicure chair and the water is slightly murky, ask the person doing the nails to drain the water out, and then replenish it with fresh water instead. You can also go in and observe the facilities while you are waiting your turn. If you notice that the manicurist puts tools into the same water and cleanser without changing it out, you may not want to have your nails done at that particular store.

Fungus and bacteria grow rapidly in and around the nails and you don’t want to get any sort of infection.

You should also think about bringing your own nail polish when you visit a salon or any sort of place that specializes in nails. Nail polish is not ordered on a weekly basis anywhere. The salons and individual shops do not reorder their supplies until they become low or run out.

Therefore, many of the polishes that are available will be old and will chip within a day or two. Also, when you are getting a pedicure, you may want to opt to not have your heels scraped. You should only take this option if your feet are particularly dry. Having the soles of your feet scraped could result in cracking later.

Be particularly careful when you have anyone who is going to be cutting around your nail beds or your feet. Although these areas can be made up beautiful, they can also become painful or infected if they are not treated with sensitivity. Trust your sixth sense when seeking out a professional to work on your hands or your feet.
