| Is Skin Fungus Ruining The
Look of Your Feet? |
| by Louise Forrest |
| |
As the dog days of summer settle in and the sun continues
to beat down on our fragile bodies, we start dressing more
and more comfortably every time we walk out the door. Those
of us that are extremely conscious about our skin remember
to put on sun block if we’re going to be outside for
more than 20 minutes. But one part of the body that we seldom
think about protecting is our feet. Besides, who ever heard
of getting a sun burn on your feet?
But there might be a whole other predator looking to dine
on your feet and it has nothing to do with the sun. Fungus
known as athlete’s foot and the fungus that attacks
your toe nails, turning them white, brittle and cloudy can
make it so that you never put on sandals again. What can
we do to fight the foot skin care fight? Here are a few
helpful tips on keeping the foot fungus monster away.
|
| |
You’ve
probably seen the commercials on television. One of the most
popular new medications that spends millions on advertising
every year is Lamisil. The fungus that causes your toenails
to go completely white, flake off and otherwise look disgusting
is quite treatable, but you do need a doctor’s prescription
to get it. For those that have avoided this disgusting fungus,
how can you keep it away? Here are a few tips: |
 |
If you’re
using a public shower or public pool, wear sandals and
try not to walk barefoot where everyone else has. These
moist and warm areas are the ultimate breeding ground
for fungus infections. |
 |
Make
sure your home shower is cleaned on a regular basis.
Just because you’re being careful to not walk
barefoot anywhere doesn’t mean that others in
your home are being just as careful. Even a pet can
track in something from outside that could cause a problem
with your feet. |
 |
If
you go to work out or go for a run, make sure you take
your shoes off and shower as soon as you get home. If
you’re having a problem with sweaty feet during
the day, try some of the popular foot powders to keep
your feet dry during the day. When you get home, take
off your sweaty shoes and socks and wash your feet than
keep them dry the rest of the day. |
 |
If you
notice even a slight whitening of your nails or the
tell-tale itching of athlete’s foot, treat it
immediately. Cases that are left to fester are much
more difficult to get rid of. |

You can also
help to fight the fungus fight by keeping the insoles of your
shoes new and in good shape. It can be tough to part with
that old, comfortable pair of sneakers or running shoes, but
if you keep coming down with bouts of fungus, tossing those
old shoes would probably be a good idea.
For overall foot health, moisturizing can
be just as important as it is on the rest of your body. Many
people don’t have to worry about fungus, but do have
large patches of unsightly dry skin on the heel and ankle
that scares many people off from wearing sandals or open toed
shoes. After your daily shower, simply apply your favorite
moisturizer and let your feet sit for a while so your skin
can absorb it in. It may sound basic, but many people ignore
their feet when it comes to basic skin care and it can really
come back and bite you in the end.
Almost everyone at one time or another has
to wage a battle against foot fungus. For most people, it
is simply a case of athlete’s foot that a good cream
or powder will fix. For others, it is a more serious nail
fungus infection that takes weeks or even months to treat.
Keep your feet dry, away from damp places and treat any sign
of infection right away and you’ll be fungus free for
life. |
