| Are You At Risk From
Skin Cancer? |
| by Louise Forrest |
| |
It is
a fact that 1 in 3 people will develop a form of cancer
in their lives. Whilst there are various form of cancer,
one that is seems to be being constantly talked about
is skin cancer. With the summers getting hotter due
to global warming you need to listen to the information
that is being presented
If you choose to ignore the warnings by experts about
skin cancer then you are putting your life into great
risk. You should always ensure that you apply a protection
of sun cream when in the sun and never miss an application.
Do not think that developing skin cancer takes a long
time.
Having skin caner is actually not that rare as many
people will believe. Whilst staying in the sun for only
a short amount of time without any means of protection
is unlikely to develop skin caner, it really is not
worth taking the risk. There are three kinds of skin
cancer and we will look at each in turn:
Melanoma – this is not that common but it can
be very serious. It is usually seen as pigmentations
on the skin with a strange shape. This can be the most
dangerous form of skin cancer as it is able to spread
to other parts of the body. If detected early and treatment
begins promptly then this particular cancer has a very
high cure rate.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma – this can develop on
area of the body that has had too much exposure to the
sun. It is normally seen as a red bump and it does not
heal. If not detected and not treated this can spread
to the lymph nodes also.
Basal Cell Carcinoma – this is the most common
type and it appears as with a tiny bump and a pearly
appearance. Again this is found on areas of the body
that have had excessive exposure to the sun. This cancer
does not spread and only appears to spread to the areas
surrounding the actual cancer itself.
People with fair skin are likely to develop this type
of cancer but it is not the most serious of the types
of cancers mentioned here. Clearly over exposure to
the sun without proper protection is not a sensible
procedure that you should consider.
So what should you do to make sure that you
can prevent the chances of getting skin cancer?
Protecting yourself from developing skin cancer is actually
quite easy, so there are really no excuses at all. You
must make sure that you are using a good sun lotion
and that you apply it whenever you are exposing your
skin to the sun. You should also try to make sure that
you are wearing loose clothing, that will cover your
skin, but at the same time keeping you cool in the summer
months. You should also try to wear a hat that will
protect your face from the glaring sun also.
Children and people with very fair skin need to be protected
the most compared to other groups of people. People
with dark skin generally do not get skin cancer, but
they should still consider adopting safe practices in
order to protect the skin when the sun it at its hottest.
One thing that seems to be very common is the use of
sunbeds. Whilst gaining skin cancer from sunbeds is
rare, you should not expose your skin to too much UV
radiation which is what sunbeds emit. |
