| Is Your Skin Cancer
Fatal? |
| by Louise Forrest |

Generally
speaking there is no form of cancer that is not fatal
if not detected early and if treatment is not provided
at the earliest opportunity.
Mycosis Fungoides – this is very rare form of
cancer and it appears to strike more in men than it
does in women. It names suggest that this is no more
than a fungal infection, but sadly this is anything
but the truth
This is a growth that cannot be controlled with the
human body. Whilst people do not notice any change to
their lifestyle this condition still needs to be treated
as soon as it is detected.
One strange aspect of this condition is that dark skinned
people are more at risk than those who are fair skinned
and it affects men more than women. Whilst this cancer
can strike at any age, it does seem to happen after
the age of fifty years of age. Why it happens is not
really known but it is not contagious and there does
not need to be a family history for it to develop.
One of the most common symptoms is scratching of the
skin and the condition appears in various stages. In
the early stages – the skin develops red patches.
These patches are very itchy and some patches can even
be raised from the skin.
The next stage normally includes skin tumours and the
colour of the lumps now appear to be purple and they
too are also raised.
After this you then have the redness where as well as
raised lumps and patches on the skin, large areas of
the skin also appear to be red. These areas of the skin
are very itchy and the skin appears to be scaly in appearance.
If not treated early the condition can spread to others
areas of the body and the next part of the body that
seems to be infected is the lymph nodes. These get inflamed
and it is at this stage that they can become cancerous.
If the do become cancerous then vital organs such as
the liver and the lungs are at risk also.
It can take up to six years to fully diagnose this condition
from the start of when the symptoms are appearing. And
this duration, this can make it very difficult to treat
at a very early stage of its development. The only way
to fully diagnose this condition is to take an actual
skin sample.
If caught early steroid based creams can be used to
clear up the condition and chemotherapy can also be
used. Even though the condition is very rare it does
happen and it can take a long time to actually detect
that you have this condition. It is normally not fatal,
but if not treated at all then it will lead to death.
Any form of skin cancer is dangerous and is clearly
something that you want to avoid. You just need to keep
checking yourself and looking for anything that appears
to be unusual such as discolouration of the skin and
patches and itching. |
