| Reducing Keloid Scars |
| by Louise Forrest |

You may
be suffering from the appearance of scars on the face
and the body and this can be difficult to remove. However
if you have keloid scars then these can be even more
difficult to treat.
What keloid scars are is then the tissue creates a claw-like
appearance around any kind of injury. You can notice
if you have a keloid scar and they have a pinkish appearance.
Such scars are actually quite harmful but at the same
time they can be very painful as well as being itchy.
Any age group can be affected but they tend to appear
in those from 2 – 20, and can equally affect both
sex groups. People with dark skin seem to develop this
condition more easily and in some extreme cases the
condition can also be disfiguring.
These types of scars are generally found on people who
have experienced an injury whether it be a burn or even
acne. Rather than the skin healing as it should, what
happens is that the scar generally tends to overfill
with a natural product found in the body called collagen
and this swelling then become enlarged.
What causes these scars is not really known, but the
use of surgery is frequently used to eliminate them.
But even with surgery then can reappear and therefore
it is suggested that genes are a contributing factor
is the development of such scars. Plus keloid scars
can increase the chances of a person developing skin
cancer.
Here are some forms of treatments that are available
Dressing – these are generally
silicone gel based and are known for reducing the scar
Steroid Injections – normally
a series of injections are given in order to reduce
the size of the scar, but this treatment can be painful
especially for those under the age of 16 years
Laser Therapy – this is not always
effective as the bulk of the scar is not always removed
Surgery – this is the best form
of treatment but the surgeon needs to take good care
when actually removing the scar, as if the scar returns
after surgery it can sometimes be larger than normal. |
