Not having this information will however prevent you from making the correct decisions which your doctor should be discussing with you

What is becoming available in the market today:

Whether you suffer from moderate or severe psoriasis there are a number of new treatments that have been approved by the FDA in the USA. One of these new treatments has been names ETANERCEPT which has been given the approval for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis. This treatment has been deemed as much safer than previous medications, such as not having any long term potential damage of the kidney or liver.

A list of some of the new treatments available:

Alefacept – originally administered for 12 weeks, 16 weeks is now considered the normal duration for treatments. There are now fewer side effects than compared to previous usage

Repeated use of this medication are showing to be safe and is also showing a big effective in the treatment of palmoplantar psoriasis after just 12 weeks. This is allowing people to walk again without any real pain and to also be able to make use of their hands again

Efalizumab – this has been shown to be safe where the treatment has been used for up to a duration of sixty weeks. There are no known side effects, but any side effects are minor such as headaches and nausea.

Etanercept – this has been used in the treatment of arthritis and is showing to be effective in the fight against psoriasis. But one disadvantage of this treatment is that there can be a relapse normally after three weeks if the treatment is stopped.

Going back to the use of the treatment is still effective without any known side effects at all. This is one advantage for this particular treatment.

Some oral treatments for psoriasis now include:

Fumaric Acid Ester Therapy – this was brought to the market over thirty years and is one of the most common prescribed treatments in the treatment of psoriasis. There are however some side effects with this treatment such as abdominal pain and nausea. Serious side effects can result in actual kidney failure.

With 37% of the people taking this medication having discounted use, many have began to restart this treatment given a successful new formulation of the treatment.

Oral Pimecrolimus – this treatment has incredible results but at the same time has severe side effects. Such research has shown that this treatment has cleared psoriasis within patients within as little as just 30 days.

This is research has been based on a number of animal studies, but more research is needed to determine an actual link between psoriatic treatment and carcinoma.
