Most
people think that if they are itching their scalp on
a regular basis it could be just that need to wash their
hair or even that it could be dandruff. But in actual
fact it is more than likely that you are suffering from
scalp psoriasis.
Just what causes scalp psoriasis?
Like other forms of psoriasis – this is a raised
scaly skin and one that can be very itchy. In some very
rare cases,
scalp
psoriasis can even affect the face.
As we have seen psoriasis is caused when skin cells
are generated much faster than they are shed and lesions
and scales are often seen.
In extreme cases, scalp psoriasis can lead to hair loss
and the condition can also spread to the forehead, ears
and also the back of the neck.
Sometimes it is not just the scalp that is affected
and in some cases those who suffer from psoriasis of
the scalp also have lesions on other areas of the body
also. There can also be some confusion over scalp psoriasis
and dermatitis but there are differences between the
two. The main difference being the scaly flakes that
appear on the affected areas of the skin.
How to treat the condition once it is detected?
Now scalp psoriasis is not that bad in the sense that
it can sometimes clear up on its and there are
some
good hair products that can help treat this very
well, and at the same time being kind to the hair also.
But your doctor should be able to advise you on any
particular products depending on the severity of the
condition.
If you just have a very mild case then there are hair
products that are available in most stores that make
use of an ingredient known as tar. If the case is more
severe then you are best of using a
shampoo
that is specifically formulated for this type of
skin condition.
Since people are different, what works for one person
will not always work for another, for whatever reason.
Also, you should try to avoid using certain treatments
for long periods as after long durations the psoriasis
could become immune to such treatments.
But like with anything you need to understand that there
is no instant cure and you need to be patient if you
are
suffering
from psoriasis and this is whether it is on the
scalp or another area of the body. Once the condition
is under control, you should keep monitoring it frequently
and not to make any sudden changes in the treatment
that you use.
The tar products that are widely available do work very
well but you need to remember that these are general
products and you could, depending on the severity, need
a
specific treatment plan to help you control the
problem.
Your doctor should be able to advise on what to use
and what not to use. One point to note is that tar products
have a strong smell and this can be off-putting for
some people.
As mentioned you should really visit a doctor for correct
diagnosis and proper advice on what products will help
you and the various options that are available.
