Causes And Treatments For Psoriasis
by Louise Forrest

All of us take the skin for granted. That is still something happens which draws our attention to it. If there is a rash, a mosquito bite, an ant bite, we react and look at the skin. Rarely however, have we had to consult a dermatologist, a physician who specializes in skin diseases. The skin is also prone to diseases, and since there are many diseases as any other, this is also a specialty for the medical professionals.

We need to consult the dermatologist when we have skin reddishness, itching, irritation, or white patches. It can turn out to be psoriasis. Watch it for a while, and if it continues, and you are uncomfortable, make an appointment with your physician, who will examine you and if suspects this disease then he will ask for a dermatologist examination.

The disease occurs suddenly, as if it has developed overnight. But if your skin is itchy in one particular place or places for some time, then you should consult your physician. May be he can catch the disease before it erupts. The areas which are affected are in the folds of the skin, such as the arms, abdomen, neck folds, arms, the area surrounding the breasts, particularly in women. It can also be seen by you as a discoloration or a white patch, which should not be ignored.

It may be psoriasis. So far it has been seen that the age group that is afflicted is 15 – 35 years. It happens possibly due to heredity. But not everyone in that same heredity group gets it. There is something in the genetic code that acts as an agent, and in others it may be suppressed. Other indicators for the onset of this disease are the weather, the drugs you may be taking, allergies, viral or bacterial infection and so on. For most of us all this details are unnecessary. We are or we are not suffering from this disease. Basically speaking, there is some inherent deficiency which reveals itself in this form.

All, or small, parts of the skin may be affected. The researchers have identified five types of this disease. These are Erythrodermic, Guttate, Inverse, Plaque, and Pustular. In Erythrodermic type, the coverage of the area is large and the color redness is very high. When it manifests itself as small pink or red spots, and is in the armpits, the abdomen folds or the breast folds, than it is known as Guttate. Red patches, accompanied by silver white scales is Plaque psoriasis, and in the Pustular psoriasis there white colored blisters, accompanied by itching skin around the reddish area surrounding the affected area. Plaque type means red patches of skin are covered by silver white scales, while the Pustular type are white blisters surrounded by reddish itching skin.

The physician will try to first find out whether is an underlying cause. He will prescribe some tests, including biopsy of the skin. However, when the patches erupt all over your skin, you may require hospitalization. That is only in the extreme cases.

More often than not, you will be given creams, psoriasis shampoos, moisturizers, Vitamin D, or A. You will be asked take more baths than you already do, with a prescribed medication or something as ordinary as oatmeal. Only if you have infection, will antibiotics be prescribed. Antibiotics may be generally, you may be prescribed creams or ointments, psoriasis creams to control itching, dandruff shampoos, moisturizers, Vitamin D or Vitamin A. etc. You may be asked to take more baths than you generally do, with oatmeal. Antibiotics are given when you have infections.

As far as prevention is concerned, well, as yet the answer is no. But you can be assured that a lot of research is going on in this subject.

You should have no hesitation to consult your physician.
