All About Psoriasis

In the United States alone, it is estimated that there are about 4.5 million adults that are suffering from a skin disease called psoriasis. In the United Kingdom and in other developed countries, the number is also high.

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by inflammation. This ailment usually affects not just the skin but also the adjacent joints. The red and often scaly patches that appear on the surface of the skin is catching too much attention and is often a cause for alarm. The sites are not good sights especially for people who are particular about skin health and overall appearance.

Plaque psoriasis is a specific type of psoriasis that is considered the most common. Experts say that this type of skin problem is occurring in up to 80% of psoriasis sufferers. The symptoms include the usual reddish patch of skin with a characterized and very much apparent silvery-white scale-like structures. Commonly, psoriasis appears on the knees, the elbows, the lower back and the scalp.

As known, psoriasis causes too much itching and is a usual and normal cause of discomfort. Because of that itching, the affected part may also experience bleeding and cracking. At its severe state, the itching caused by psoriasis can be enough to keep anyone from having a good and sound sleep at night. The adjoining pain may also prevent the patient from normally doing activities or tasks.

As a skin condition and problem the ailment is said to be among the oldest recorded. Documents and ancient hieroglyphics indicate that as early as 35 AD, ancient people had already identified this skin problem. Though the exact cause of the disease is still not ascertained, many researchers and scientists attest that the problem is caused by genetics or is hereditary. However, recent discoveries have it that psoriasis can very much be linked to a weaker immune system.

There are still not exact and standard medications for psoriasis, though through the years, there are known medications and treatments that are proven to work. Thus, effectiveness of psoriasis treatments may also be relative and may vary from one patient to another. It is important to seek medical attention and help when taking medications against psoriasis.

There are ointments and skin applications that are applied to the affected part of psoriasis patients. There are phototherapy treatments that expose the affected skin to artificial ultraviolet radiation. As such, there are also injections and pills that are called systemic treatments and are initially targeting the immune system before aiming at the psoriasis problem.

Alternative forms of treatments also abound, though there are still no specific certainties about effectiveness. Antibiotics in some patients are proven to be effective. Climatotherapy or changing climates to treat the disease is also good and effective, though not always effective. While there are herbs and other skincare products that are sold in other parts of the globe to remedy the situation.

It is important to be attentive when you have psoriasis. Seeking medical attention is a sure way of helping yourself get relief from the uncomfortable condition brought about by this skin problem.
