US Consumers Turn to Organic Skincare
by Louise Forrest

Cosmetics figures have it that in the United States, there had been a 24.1% rise in sales of organic skincare products in the United States to $350m in 2006 compared to sales figures in 2005. The trend is evidently continuing and is expected to be steeper as time goes by. One proof would be the increasing advertisements of organic skincare products across all media, whether in television, radio or print like newspapers and magazines.

In October 2007, data about lipsticks with unhealthy content of lead were released to warn more consumers about the danger of non-organic cosmetic products. The US' Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has found out that about a third of all 33 popular and widely distributed lipstick brands across the market had been tested and had been found to contain about 0.1 parts in every million of lead content, which is way higher than the level allowed by health regulator US Food and Drug Administration. Later, it was found that the lead in those lipsticks were not really part of the product, but were added through packaging procedures.

Further analysis from several studies indicates that US consumers are quickly shifting focus into organic skincare products primarily because of personal health reasons. These consumers are worried that using non-organic products might lead to development of certain types of cancers and other health problems. Consumers are fearful that several skin problems and conditions may arise from accumulation of harsh ingredients that would lead to skin disorders. Synthetic preservatives and chemicals in several cosmetics are proven not to give out good and healthy effects to the skin.

The other reason why many consumers shift to organic skincare products is because of environmental reasons. As people increasingly become concerned about global warming and further environmental degradation, consumers are finding out measures on how they could greatly contribute to environment protection. For sure, using organic skincare products would be a contributory means as the basic ingredients in such products are enough to help curtail the production of non-biodegradable and toxic substances to the environment.

Many cosmetic manufacturers are starting to recognize the consumer trend towards organic skincare products. Now, many cosmetic products are highlighting their efforts to replace synthetic ingredients with organic and herbal ones. Many of them are also ensuring the public not just about their health safety but also of their inability to further add on to the current pollution in the environment.

Though, there is still a problem over classification of 'organic products'. Many critics and concerned citizens have been raising concerns about the flaws of organic classifications. In the US alone, organic skincare products are basically not 100% made of organic ingredients. Most of them still have synthetics and chemicals, though they have added several organic components. It is expected that in the near future, such setbacks would be defined and resolved once and for all so that consumers would never ever have to doubt the integrity, safety and effectiveness of organic skincare products.
