| Treating Sensitive Skin
Organically |
| by Louise Forrest |

| A
startling number of men and women are reported to have sensitive
skin. It can be a condition that can ruin your enjoyment of
many different things that many of us take for granted. How
did you end up with sensitive skin and how can it be treated
naturally? Let’s take a closer look at some of these
questions and see if there are non-chemical alternatives to
treating sensitive skin.
Before we look at treating sensitive skin, how do you even
know if you have it? For most people, sensitive skin isn’t
something they have their whole lives, instead, it is something
that tends to creep up on you bit by bit. We sometimes forget
that the human body in constantly changing and evolving and
that it is extremely common to develop allergies that we never
knew we had later in life. The same goes for things like lactose
intolerance and even sensitive skin and teeth.
We can also grow out of these things if they affected us as
children or teenagers. The first sign that many people have
sensitive skin is a strange tingling feeling in areas that
have been touched or rubbed up against by clothes. It almost
feels like that part of your skin is falling asleep, but it
doesn’t go away with motion. A second sign that you
might have sensitive skin is that your skin hurts or shows
rash like symptoms from common, every day products like dish
soap or cleaners.
You can also feel increased tingling when you expose your
skin to things like wind or rain. A final sign that should
send you to the doctor is a constant battle with dry or overly
oily skin with no cause that you can see. The use of moisturizers
either doesn’t work or makes things worse. If this sounds
like you, you likely have sensitive skin.
Recent studies show that a starting number of women suffer
from sensitive skin, at least on parts of their bodies. So,
we know that many, many women suffer from sensitive skin and
we know what to look for. Now, is there a way to treat it
without pumping our bodies full of chemicals?
The first treatment that most doctors recommend doesn’t
include putting anything on your skin but it looks at what
you are putting into your body. Food allergies are a likely
cause of sensitive skin for many people. It could be one particular
ingredient that you are eating every day like dairy (lactose
intolerance) or wheat or it could be a particular class of
food like spicy foods or foods that are too acidic.
There is no real rhyme or reason why these foods affect our
skin the way they do, you will simply have to take a hit and
miss approach at treating it. Keep a log book of what you
are cutting out of your diet to see what changes take place.
The next thing that your doctor will recommend is taking a
look at how you wash your clothes and what you are washing
them with. It is possible that you might have an allergy to
a particular fabric type. With the multitude of man-made fabrics
on the market these days, it is no wonder that one or two
of them would cause skin irritation. Eliminate fabrics one
by one or try wearing nothing but cotton for a few days to
see if it helps.
You should also look at the detergent you are using and things
like fabric softener and dryer sheets. These items are usually
packed full of perfumes and chemicals that can be quite harsh
on your skin. There is a reason why babies have their own
detergent, and it isn’t unheard of to have adult’s
skin be affected the same way.
Treating sensitive skin organically is a great way to cure
this troublesome condition. Before you agree to pump yourself
full of hormones, check and double check the above causes
to make sure that it isn’t something you can cure naturally
first . |
