Essential Oils Information
by Louise Forrest

Essential oils are found in plants and it is said that they are the immune system for that plant. The oils are normally sold in 100% concentration and are extracted from the bark, seeds and also the leaves of some plants.

The process of extraction can make the oils very concentrated and so if you do acquire any essential oils that are neat, you should only use a very tiny amount.

Whilst the names may not suggest it, essential oils are not in the slightest oily and many are actually clear in color. There are other oils that are also called absolute oils but these should not be mistaken for essential oils. Absolute oils are more associated with the manufacturing of perfumes due to their fragrances.

There are various methods of actually extracting the oil from the plants and these include.

Steam – this is the simplest and also the most common method for extracting any essential oils. When the steam is pushed through the plant, the oils are evaporated and when cool, the oils return to a liquid format for collection.

Expression – this is not a very common process as it can only be used with certain plants, such as citrus fruits.

Supercritical CO2 – utilizing CO2 for the purpose of extracting oils.

There are a number of oils that are used in therapy sessions as they are known to have certain benefits. For example, lavender is considered to be very relaxing and it is suggested to apply a few drops to your pillow case when you go to sleep.

But despite all the benefits of essential oils you still need to take some caution. Here are some guidelines that do need to be followed:

- young children and pregnant women should not use essential oils
- they should never be taken orally
- they should be kept away from the eyes

So given these cautions how do you use these essential oils?

Generally essential oils would be added to a bath in order to help you to relax and they can also be added to a diffuser to create a relaxing environment for everyone in the home. Given that essential oils are very highly concentrated you need to apply say 6 drops of essential oils to a bath for instance in order to gain the benefits.

Many people are also turning to essential oils and organic skin care and even making their own skin care products in order to ensure that what they are actually putting onto their skin is actually safe and not been processed in any artificial way.
