Ask any man or any woman about shaving and hair removal
in general and you are likely to hear horror stories about
cuts, waxing and solutions bought over the television that
contain more toxic ingredients than your average pack of
cigarettes. But there are safe and completely organic ways
to remove the hair from your face, legs and from your unmentionables.
Let’s take a look at some of the basic steps you can
take to keep razor burn at a minimum and lessen the pain
of hair removal.
The most popular way to remove hair from our bodies is by
shaving. It is cheap, although the price of disposable razors
continues to climb at an astonishing rate and even though
the results can be average at best, the procedure for shaving
is simple. The first thing you need to do before you even
press razor to flesh is to make sure that your skin is wet
long enough for the razor to really do its work.
While every person is different, the average person needs
at least 2-3 minutes of constant water exposure to help
make the skin soft and easy to shave. If you simply apply
shaving cream, or an organic alternative to your skin right
away without letting warm water soften your skin, you are
making your job much more difficult. Warm water is your
friend so let it do the first part of the work for you.
Picking the right razor is another part of shaving that
many people have disagreements about. Some folks swear by
the newest multi-blade razor on the market, even though
we’ll soon need a second mortgage on our homes to
afford replacement blades, while others point to the simplicity
of the two-blade disposable that’s been around for
30 years as the best. No matter which razor you put your
trust in, the key is in replacing the blade frequently.
How frequently is enough? It depends on how often
you shave and how coarse your hair is. Obviously, the more
your hair resembles steel wool, the more often you’ll
need to replace your blade, but a good rule of thumb is
once a week. You’ll know when you are getting a dull
blade because you will start cutting yourself more and you
might notice increased razor burn and even possible folic
infections on your legs.
The real challenge for those folks that are looking for
all natural and organic ways to shave comes from the search
for shaving cream. Luckily, it is a myth that you even need
shaving cream to shave your legs. Things like body gel and
hair conditioner work just as well and most folks have a
much easier time finding organic or at least partially organic
soaps and conditioners as opposed to shaving cream. It does
help to use something, however. Relying on just water seldom
gets you a close shave because the cream helps to get the
hair to stand up, which makes it much easier to shave away.
The debate about which direction you should shave is a nasty
one, but there is really only one answer. You should always
shave against the grain of your hair for best results. Some
hair, especially in the bikini area, tends to grow in circular
patterns so you might need to shave in multiple directions
to remove it all.
One all natural solution to the aftermath of shaving, also
known as razor burn, is the application of natural tea tree
oil. In fact, one of the most popular “cures”
for razor burn is to shave with hair conditioner made with
or made from tea tree oil. Many Australian hair care products
flaunt the fact that they contain tea tree oil, so if you
can find one of these that is also organic, it can be just
want you’re looking for to keep your freshly shaved
areas clean and in great shape after you shave.
