Oil Maintenance is Not Just For Your Car Anymore
by Louise Forrest

Oily skin can do more than cause acne. If it is not put into its place, oily skin can cause people to have a low self-image, poor self-esteem, and emotional distress. However, if you can learn some ways to get your oil under control, you may be able to avoid falling into depressive traps and regain your self-confidence. Take control of yourself and your face with some basic tips regarding oil and your skin.

First of all, never blame yourself. Oily skin has a lot to do with genetics, so if you have a mother, grandmother, and aunt with oily skin chances are you are going to have the same. However, emotions do play a part in skin care whether you want to admit it or not. If you are someone who stresses easily it will show on your face. The good news is that if you are someone who lives with oily skin, the chances that your future wrinkles will be held at bay longer than the average person. The other thing that you should remember if you have oily skin, you are going to not only calm down, but show some patience as well. Oily skin is not going to disappear, and the results of any facial regime will take time to show its full effects.

You need to understand that oily skin is going to take consistency. You have to think of your skin like training a puppy. You are going to have to get into a routine, and follow it over and over again until your skin becomes trained. If you stick with a regular routine, you will see that the oil will learn to subside. However, make sure that you do not strip your face with a harsh cleanser or by stroking your face too hard. The objective to cleansing is to wash through the excess oil without stripping all of it away. If you get your face too dry, you will find your skin overproducing oil to overcompensate for what has been lost.

Another key to oily skin is to tone. There are many different toners on the market, but you want one that can show you results. The best test for a toner is to use a cotton ball and after you cleanse your face, use the cotton ball to apply your toner. After you have toned your face, look at the cotton ball and see how much dirt the toner was able to pick up out of your cleansed pores. If you have a clear cotton ball, you may want to try another toner. It is important that you never use an astringent that has alcohol in it. If your astringent or toner has alcohol, you will strip too much oil from your face, and find yourself with more oil than you started out with.

Your makeup selections are important when you are trying to cover up what the oils have produced. If you are someone who is trying to conceal acne, you need to make sure that the foundations, concealers, and masking techniques are low in oils. If you can find things that have salicylic acid in them, they will help to fight off oils as well. If you live in a sunnier part of the world, do not forget your sunscreen. Sunscreen will help to keep your oil in check, just make sure that you try the more gel like formulas instead of the creamier varieties. You should also avoid any kind of cocoa butter or mineral oils, which really the name should warn you on its own, but just in case.

There are many products that claim to be cure alls for oily skin, and there are just as many celebrities that endorse them. However, you need to always find what is best for you and not what someone is being paid to tell you is great. Try to get into a daily routine, be consistent, and drink lots of water, and your skin should follow your good example.
