When to DIY
by Louise Forrest

The phrase Do It Yourself makes most people think of house projects. Fixing a sink. Putting new tile in the bathroom. But doing it yourself can also apply to beauty products. From getting a makeover to having manicures and pedicures, there are times when you may want to do it yourself and others when you may prefer to have someone do the work for you.

Generally, when it comes to makeup, women tend to put it on themselves. They choose the colors they want, whether or not to use certain products, and for the most part there is nothing wrong with doing so. There is no right or wrong when it comes to color choice (though choosing the right foundation for your skin tone is usually quite important), despite what society says. True, certain colors may help bring out your eyes and enhance features, but most women are not quite sure which colors or how to do it.

This can be the tricky part of doing your own makeup. A lot of women have no real way of learning how. Most will go by what her sister, mother, friend, or other female figure does, assuming it is the best or only way to apply a certain type of makeup. For example, some women actually line their inner eye with eyeliner. However, this is not a very good choice because the product can end up irritating your eye.

You do not necessarily have to seek out professional advice, but if you really want to know some of the best ways to put on makeup you can look for a sales representative for beauty products, one who either works on her own (as Avon and Mary Kay women do) or you can visit a large department store that has large beauty product counters that often offer free makeovers.

The women selling the products are likely to be interested in getting you to buy them, however, most of the time they are trained on how to perform makeovers or at the very least understand the best ways of applying makeup and will instruct you as you do it yourself. By paying close attention, you can learn from these women so as to avoid application goofs later on when you are faced with makeup in your own mirror.

Manicures and pedicures can also be done yourself or you can look for professionals to do them for you. Some women (and even men) may regularly visit a salon in order to have her or his nails done, whereas others simply opt for applying a coat of nail polish and moving on with life. The choice is yours, but if you want to visit a salon, make sure they have a clean facility, change the water and cleansers they use for nails and tools, and have a decent knowledge of nail care.

Many times a professionally done manicure or pedicure can look fantastic, but if you learn to treat your nails right and know what beauty products to purchase, you can have the same professional look.

Try to find good cuticle oils or creams to help treat dry cuticles, toss out any old nail polish, and look for a good nail buffer to give your nails extra shine after treating them to a gentle polishing to help smooth them out and promote nail growth. Trim and file carefully into the shape you want and be tender to the skin around your nails.

Keeping your nails clean can help remove bacteria and allow nails to grow in healthy and bright. There are different nail kits out there for fingernails, and plenty of foot treatment kits that have pumice stones, foot scrubs, foot moisturizers, and other items to indulge your feet. Be careful not to cut your toenails too closely and avoid cutting them so they curve as that might promote ingrown toenails.

Doing it yourself can feel rewarding and be a lot cheaper, but if you find yourself floundering and confused, do not be afraid to seek out more professional help.
