Every woman
always wants to know: What colors look best on me? We are
constantly seeking out those magical colors that will bring
out our eyes, make our lips look fuller, give our cheeks that
rosy look, and make our skin appear flawless. Then there are
those that seek to shoot down certain colors and styles: Oh,
that will never go with your skin tone. That eyeshadow does
not work with your eyes. Why are you wearing that shade of
lipstick?
With so many dos and don’ts in the beauty world, it
can be difficult to know what you should look for and whether
or not you should wear that crazy purple color on your eyelids.
True enough, there are a few basics you may want to follow
in order to keep from looking completely bizarre, such as
finding a foundation that blends in well with your skin tone.
For example, too much yellow will give you a sallow, if not
slightly jaundiced look.
No one wants that. Even women who go bold and crazy with their
makeup (dark eyeliner, bright green eyeshadow, blood-red lipstick)
do not go for sick or dying. That just does not make sense.
The same goes for applying your makeup in a sensible manner;
overboard on too much blush will give you a clown-like look.
Using your eyeliner pencil as a lip liner is, well, odd, to
say the least.
It tends to be what friends, family, and society deems as
“correct” in terms of our makeup. The woman wearing
the colors described above might draw strange looks in a crowd
but within her own circle, be considered perfectly fine, if
not downright fantastic looking.
The truth of makeup is that there is no right or wrong answer
when it comes to color. Society is dynamic; it is constantly
changing and what is in today might be out tomorrow. If you
look at the past uses of makeup and see how drastically different
it is today, what may seem strange to us was perfectly normal,
if not highly attractive to the peoples of that past time.
What matters most about makeup is what its true purpose is.
Makeup is here for us because we want to use it in order to
look fabulous. When we look fabulous, we feel fabulous. You
can watch any makeover show on television and see a dramatic
change in anyone who has gone through a transition in which
their appearance changes to one they appreciate more than
what they did in the past. Confidence feels good, and looking
great, even if it is all in our minds, will translate out
into that sort of confidence.
You have to remember; when a woman at a makeup counter is
telling you that a color looks great on you, and you look
in the mirror and you just do not see it, then do not let
her talk you into buying that product. Sales people are doing
just that; their job, which is selling. There are some out
there who do their job with a sense of ethics; they are not
going to sell you something for the sake of selling, they
want you to be truly happy with your purchase.
Yes, it can feel a little disparaging to have someone give
you an odd look or make a remark that is less than flattering
about your makeup choices, but you have to remember; this
is one person’s opinion. If you do not know that person,
what does their opinion matter to you? You like what you are
wearing, right? You love the colors, no matter how crazy or
basic they are. You enjoy your makeup routine in the morning,
noon, or night, and it makes you feel beautiful. That right
there is what matters most of all.
So wear the colors you want and feel free. There are no concrete
makeup coloring rules. After all, you are a vibrant person
whose personality is as colorful as what you carry in your
makeup kit, not a color by numbers book. |
