Save The Eyelashes
by Louise Forrest

Every now and then, we are bound to lose an eyelash or two. Just like any other hair on our bodies, they may simply have gone through their life and are ready to fall out and be replaced by a new hair. You may have questions about your beauty products and whether or not they will affect how your lashes fall out or react to them, and by reading up on what beauty products can do in regards to your lashes, you may be able to save some of your long, silky ones for longer.

First and foremost, you must treat your eyelashes with some tender loving care. Rubbing, pulling, and rough wiping can make them fall out quicker. Eyelashes are delicate and with constant harshness heaped upon them, they will only say sayonara to you. You may even be allergic to the filling in your pillow which can make your eyes swell and lead to damage of your eyelash area.

Before some women put on beauty products like mascara and eye color, they use an eyelash curler to bend their lashes up, helping to open the eye area and make lashes a bit more noticeable. After all, if they are pointing straight forward, it can be difficult to see how long and luxurious they are, right? True, but an eyelash curler, if not handled correctly and used too often, can be harmful for your lashes.

They are bent into an angle they do not grow in, and without attention to them you may break them or pull them out entirely. Finding a curler with a thick, spongy tip is best, be gentle on your lashes, and then open and pull away carefully. Always curl your lashes when they are free of makeup.

Mascara often comes in both waterproof and water soluble. Many women opt for waterproof just to make sure it stays on longer. However, with advances in cosmetics these days, you can be equally sure that the water soluble mascara is not going to melt off your eyelashes in a jiffy. Because waterproof mascara is more difficult to remove, you might want to use it only on special occasions when you are sure you may be crying (weddings) or sweating a lot (window shopping on the street during summer). Waterproof mascara will come off with certain eye makeup removers, but it usually requires more wiping and pulling to make sure it is all removed.

Another thing to be aware of if you want your lashes to remain on your eyes as long as possible, keep your mascara fresh. Mascara is a place bacteria likes to grow, and no one wants to be putting bacteria on their lashes every day. The second your mascara starts drying out, get rid of it. After about four months, you should also throw out your mascara to prevent too much bacteria buildup and then putting that over your lashes. Also, the second your mascara tube starts to smell odd, chuck it.

This means the bacteria is in such copious amounts, they are actually noticeable through the smell they produce. Not only would the bacteria be on you eyelashes, but it could also get into your eyes and possibly cause eye damage or in worse case scenarios, blindness.

If you can find a cleanser that will allow the easy removal of eye makeup, then use that instead of an eye makeup remover. This is because eye makeup removers tend to make you wipe or rub at your eyes, where as cleansers require less such actions. The more gentle you are on your lashes, the longer you are likely to have them, both in length and time.

By paying attention to your lashes, what you are putting on them, and how you are taking those beauty products off, you may find that a few subtle changes in your routine can lead to long, healthy lash life.
