Old People Tend to Neglect Footcare
by Louise Forrest

A study conducted in England has shown that elderly people tend to neglect foot care because of several factors. The research found that among the reasons are the usually expensive service fees for hiring the services of a chiropodist, or a professional in providing foot care treatments and procedures. The result: the pensioners are usually stuck up in their homes because of embarrassment. In some cases, patients feel discomfort that limits their overall mobility. Such trend is also a good explanation why older people usually feel socially isolated, although it can never be a sole cause.

The Age Concern Calderdale organization has run up the study to look at how appropriate foot care affects the overall outlook of aging individuals. It is a common knowledge that the skin around the foot and the toenails get harder to maintain and taken care of when a person ages. Indeed, that can be part of the setbacks of aging and surely, people are not getting too comfortable about it. As people age, they tend to neglect the overall health of their foot. That is because their old age disables them to bend further. Another thing is that they tend to just attend to other leisure activities that they are having more fun doing.

Another factor that also leads to negligence of foot care health is mentioned above and that is the high costs of having so. The current services offered by chiropodists are not very affordable. As specialists, the fees those professionals collect are justified by the challenging role and tediousness of the activity. It is not easy to take care of the foot area specially when the person is aging. The toe nails tend to get much harder and grow more rapidly. They also tend to discolor, making them look less appealing and disgusting. The skin around the area is also as devastating as discoloration becomes more evident and the texture gets rougher with the onset of wrinkling.

Experts advise authorities to help the elderly get over their foot care problems. If only proper subsidies and support systems would put in place, older people could care for their foot more. The tag prices of chiropodists’ services should not be a hindrance for securing and getting foot care services. If such services can never be offered for free, it is recommended that the elderly at least be offered significant discounts. This way, old people would not dread going for a foot care service or treatment.

The study also found an interesting fact. In England, it is estimated that one elderly in every three within the age range of more than 65 years old is not able to even cut his or her own toenails. The figure can be related to world trends, as the basic pension living condition is almost the same as in that in the United States, Canada and other European nations.

Indeed, foot care is one factor old people should take more focus on.
