by Louise Forrest

Diabetes is a serious ailment that is affecting a rising number of people worldwide. The increasing volume of people afflicted by the ailment can be attributed to the fact that lifestyles lived by all ages are becoming unhealthy. The ailment is characterized by unusually high levels of glucose in the blood. Over time, diabetes can greatly lead to adverse conditions of the eyes, the kidneys, the nerves, the blood vessels and the foot. Yes, the onset of the disease can initially manifest in the feet. That is why there should be proper and appropriate foot care measures to keep feet healthy and prim during the onset of diabetes.

One explanation why diabetes manifests in conditions in the feet is that because of the slight damage the disease can cause to the nervous system, a patient may not feel the feet appropriately. Thus, normal secretion of sweat and production of oil that serves as lubrication to the skin in each foot is significantly impaired. Unusual pressure to the skin, the joints and the bones, which happens during physical activities like walking, cause breakage of skin leading to sores and even small wounds. You know how diabetics’ bodies are impaired to naturally heal all types of wounds. This makes a very pressing problem. To alleviate further problems at the onset of the ailment, it would be helpful if the following simple tips for footcare could be observed.

1.
Refrain from walking barefoot especially outdoors. It is advised that you put foot protection like slippers or shoes, or even socks, anywhere you walk in. Proper foot care should be observed when walking in the beach particularly. Before you put on your shoes after a walk in the beach, remember to shake the shoes to get rid of sand particles before wearing them again.
2.
Inspect the feet visually everyday to immediately notice any sore or discoloration that may indicate severity of diabetes. When the diabetes gets worse, your foot would surely be affected drastically.
3.
Moisturize the skin in each foot regularly. Drying of the skin at the soles and sides of each foot makes up for cracking and eventually wounding. Remember that wounds great or small are serving as good entry points for different types of illness- and infection-causing germs. Lotion can be good moisturizers.
4.
Always cut the nails on your toes straight across. You can also opt to follow the toes’ natural curve if you like. Cut the nails short and properly file the ages to avoid possible creation of wounds.
5.
Do not shoes that are too tight as doing so may cause sores. Wear socks as often as possible.
6. Keep feet elevated especially when sitting down. A much as possible, avoid cross-sitting leg position as doing so may further affect blood flow into the feet. Ensure that the blood is flowing healthily into the feet through regular exercise.

Good foot care should be observed and implemented more especially during the onset of diabetes. Having a good and effective foot care regimen would ensure better health of the both foot.
