| Options For Eye Surgery |
| by Louise Forrest |
| |
There
are quite a few options for eye surgery in order to
help with any poor vision that you may be currently
suffering from. Most operations that take place on the
eye are called refractive surgery, the most common being
LASIK.
Any form of eye surgery that is performed is only
performed on one eye at a time. First one will be
operated on, and this will be allowed to heal, time
will be allowed to lapse to ensure that the eye is
focusing correctly and only then will the other eye
be operated on.
There are several options for eye surgery and
some are detailed here:
Excimer– these use lasers with
the objective of reshaping the comea. What this reshaping
does is to change the amount of light that enters the
light and therefore improving the overall focus of the
eye.
Here are some other procedures that you should
be aware of:
LASEK which stands for Laser Epithelial
Keratomileusis should never be confused with LASIK which
was mentioned earlier in the article. This type of procedure
can correct short sightedness as well as long sightedness.
Epi-LASIK – this is very similar
to LASEK and the main difference is that no alcohol
or blade is actually used. And the main advantage appears
to be less pain and much greater healing.
LASIK – this can also be used
to treat short and long sightedness, and lasers are
used to reshape the eye to allow more light to enter
it, therefore improving overall vision. Here alcohol
and other surgical tools are used and the surgery is
very quick, in many cases, each eye can take less than
a minute to perform.
Laser LASIK – here the procedure
does not make use of any surgical tools, but the use
of lasers are used to change the shape of the eyes.
PRK or Photorefractive Keratectomy
is used to treat and correct both short and long sightedness.
Here what happens in the procedure is that actual tissue
is taken from the cornea using a laser. And here again
the procedure is generally performed within a minute.
There are also procedures where new lenses are actually
placed in to the eyes. This is referred to as Non-Excimer
Laser Procedures, and radio waves are then used to
then change the shape of the eye itself. This is normally
performed as an actual enhancement to other eye procedures
rather than an actual replacement.
If you are looking to correct your vision then you
need to be aware of the options that are available
to you. The above is a general list only, and what
you need to do is to talk about the various options
with your doctor or other eye care specialist. |
