| Looking After Your Eyes |

The eyes
are probably one of the most fragile parts of the body
and even the slightest damage can them not to function
correctly. Many people may not realise that even the
work place could be leading to potential eye problems.
Given that you will spend nearly 40 years in a working
environment, you need to make sure that the environment
which you are in is not creating any health problems
and that includes the eyes also.
Here are some steps on what you can do to protect
your eyes when at work:
One of the things that you should do prior to starting
work is to actually see if there are any potential hazards
that could create a problem, and then addressing them
as required. An example of this would be if you work
in an office and you make use of a computer a great
deal. There are risks associated with looking at a computer
screen and one thing that you should do is to take breaks
away from your computer monitor.
If you are not taking enough breaks then you could experience
blurry and sore eyes, strained eyes and also eyes that
are sensitive to bright lights. Also, if you normally
wear glasses then you should wear them when working
at a computer, but see your optician if you need any
further advice.
There are also regulations that are set by health and
safety regulators that are in force to help protect
your eyes. An example of this is poor lighting and this
too can also cause excess straining on the eyes. What
you need to do is to ensure that you have sufficient
natural lighting as other sources of light can make
the eyes strain. You should therefore check the positioning
of your desk to that of a window.
If you are working in an industrial area that you should
always make sure that your eyes are always well protected
by wearing safety goggles. This will help prevent any
parts, oil, grease of dirt from potentially contacting
and therefore damaging the eyes in someway.
Some other forms of protecting your eyes when
in the work place include: |

| - |
safety glasses |
| - |
face shields |
| - |
helmets |
| - |
face masks |
|

Of course
the level of protection that you will need will clearly
depend on the environment in which you are working.
If you are faced with chemicals on a regular basis or
anything else that may be hazardous, then wearing safety
goggles is an absolute must.
One thing that people seem to do is to rub the eye should
they feel any debris get into. This is a mistake and
can actually make matters worse. What you should do
is to wash your eyes out immediately.
Should anything such as metal make contact with the
eye, and you rub the eye, there is a potential that
the eye can become cut or even scratched. You should
never try to remove anything yourself and should go
to the hospital straight away. |
