Have You Cataracts?
by Louise Forrest

The eyes are very sensitive, delicate and also very important which help you perform every single task. So taking care of your eyes is very important but there are some challenges that will appear to get in the way.

One of the problems that the can develop within the eyes is cataracts which is a condition where there is a clouding of the natural eye lens. What the lens does is to help us focus, so if there is a clouding on the lens, then having the eye focus will become difficult.

The lens of the age is no more than water and protein and generally as we age that protein become less and less and this clouding then appears in the eyes.

There are generally three forms of cataracts

Nuclear – this generally occurs due to natural ageing changes.

Cortical – this is normally suffered by those that are diabetic

Sub capsular – develops at the back of the lens

When a cataract initially develops there is really no immediate impact and your vision can still be normal.

There are different symptoms from what type of cataract you actually have ad the outcome will vary depending on that condition. A strange thing is that if you have a nuclear cataract, this can sometimes bring an improvement to the condition but this is often short lived. If you have a sub capsular cataract you may not actually notice any symptoms until the condition has advanced.

There are no real or known reasons as to what causes cataracts but some suggestions are

- light
- radiation
- diabetes

If you do notice that you are developing cataracts then wearing glasses will for instance help to improve your vision.

But this will not make the cataract go away and you need to consider the forms of treatments that are available. One option is surgery but this should only be considered if the cataracts have spread too far and have impaired your vision greatly. But you should be aware that the surgery here is a routine and painless procedure and which can help you to regain your sight.

The rates of success for those that have surgery, is very high with the majority of people regaining excellent sight.

Within the surgical procedure, the actual clouded lens is removed and this is normally replaced with a clear plastic lens.

Overall cataracts are actually quite easy to treat but you should be aware of the symptoms and avoid anything that can lead to cataracts in order to avoid surgery.
