| Eczema: The Lizard
Hive |
| by Louise Forrest |
| |
You start
to notice that your skin has become irrational in certain
areas. You suspect that you might be getting hives,
but then you notice that the hives are only in random
isolated areas. You are constantly itching and your
skin is starting to look worse and worse. What could
you possibly be suffering from? The answer is that you
are probably a victim of eczema. |
| |
The truth
is that if you have eczema, you were probably diagnosed
as a child. Eczema is one of the more common diseases
amongst children younger than six. Most children that
are diagnosed with eczema will outgrow it eventually,
but even if it sticks around a little longer, the areas
should become more isolated.
If you think that you may be a candidate for eczema
there are some measures that you can take in order to
help your skin to not be so irritated and similar to
a lizard. |
| |
Eczema
is not the end of the world, so the first step is to
be calm about your dry patches of skin. The worst part
about eczema is that it is very itchy, and therefore,
it is hard to not want to scratch at it constantly.
Try your hardest to not scratch or pick at the areas
that are dry. Many times there are patches of eczema
that will form around areas that are prone to bending
a lot such as the knees, elbows, wrists, and especially
the ankles.
The problem with these areas is that they can get so
dry they will start to crack. When the eczema is more
exposed by the cracking, and you stick your dirty fingernails
in it to scratch, the chances of you getting an infection
start to increase, and that is harder to treat than
the eczema. |

You should
always contact a physician or a dermatologist when dealing
with eczema. Eczema is a skin disease and regular moisturizer
is not going to do the trick. More than likely, the
doctor will prescribe a steroid ointment that you can
apply to the “hot spots.” You should see
results with a steroid cream, if applied regularly,
within a couple of weeks.
Although there are some countries that are shying away
from the uses of cortisone and steroid ointments, so
this may not be an available option if you live in certain
areas of Europe. You can also inquire about getting
a prescription for a liquid medication called Hydroxyzine
HCL. This is a medication that can be taken to decrease
the desire to itch starting from an internal origin.
The best thing to do with your medication is to apply
it after you have taken a bath or shower and your skin
is moist.
Purchase a thick ointment such as Aquafor that can be
applied as a thin layer over whatever ointment you are
prescribed. The trick with eczema medication is to be
consistent. One application is not going to be sufficient,
so you must be consistent when you are given any sort
of medication. |

Some
home remedies that are good are things like oatmeal
baths. Aveeda sells packets of oatmeal that come in
sets of four or five to a box and you can purchase them
at any drugstore or local market. You run a warm bath
and let the powder dissolve in the running water.
Try to soak in the oatmeal for a good twenty minutes
and this should temporarily moisten your skin and help
with unwanted itching. Also, you can apply a thick coat
of moisturizer on your hot spots before bed and place
socks or a shirt over you to lock in the moisture while
you sleep. |

Lastly,
there is a cream that is available over the counter,
but you usually have to ask a pharmacist to give it
to you. It is not a prescription-required cream, but
for some reason, only the pharmacist has access to it.
The name of the cream is Vanicream and it works wonders
on your skin. Vanicream is particularly good if you
have a mild case of eczema. If you are dealing with
a small patch, you should try the Vanicream first before
spending money on more expensive methods. |
