| Preventing and Treating
Your Dry Skin |
| by Louise Forrest |
| |
If you
have dry skin, you know that it can be both uncomfortable
and unsightly. Dry skin can be itchy, can peel, and
if left untreated can end up cracking open and oozing.
This can lead to infection and other problems that nobody
wants to deal with. Additionally, it can look bad when
you have flaky skin which also includes dandruff that
can show up on your clothes and in your hair. |
| |
| Causes of Dry Skin |
If you
do suffer from dry skin, there can be a number of causes.
For one, you can simply be dehydrated. If you are not
getting enough in the way of fluids, your skin can sometimes
show the results early on. Additionally, you could have
eczema or other skin disorders as well. |
| |
| Treating Dry Skin |
If you
do suffer from dry skin that is itchy and even scaly,
then the firs thing you need to do is make sure you
are cleaning it the right way. Do not use hot water
on your dry skin. Water that is too hot will actually
remove the natural oils from your skin and make your
dry skin worse. Instead, you us a lukewarm water to
clean your skin. |
| |
Once
you have washed using warm water, you should be prepared
to moisturize early. While your skin is still damp,
you can apply liberal amounts of a moisturizing lotion.
Try to use somewhat is specially designed to treat dry
and itchy skin. This will not only moisturize your skin
anew, but also will lock in the moisture from your bath
or shower. That is why you should apply your moisturizer
while the skin is still damp. |
| |
| In Your Hair |
If the
itchy and dry skin you are suffering from happens to
be on your scalp, then you know that you need to treat
it immediately. Dandruff can be very unsightly in addition
to the itchiness it presents. Wash your hair as you
normally would with a moisturizing or dandruff shampoo.
Rinse it well with warm, not hot, water. Once you have
done that, you can use a moisturizing conditioner as
well. This will act as a double treatment. Additionally,
conditioners often contain some of the essential oils
that will help rehydrate your scalp and hair. |
| |
| More Than Just Dry Skin |
If you
have severely dry skin that flakes and looks scaly and
you have tried treatment without results, it may be
time to see a doctor. If you have eczema or a number
of other skin disorders, treatment will be required
beyond simple washing and moisturizing at home. These
can be caused by allergic reactions or other deeper
issues which your doctor can help you treat both topically
and internally. |
| |
If you
do think that is a problem you may have, call your doctor
and ask him or her about treatments. Half the battle
against dry skin is about finding out what the problem
is so that you can give it the proper treatment. |
| |
As you
well know, dry skin can be a huge problem. It is uncomfortable,
messy, and unsightly, not to mention unhealthy. If you
find that you are suffering from dry skin, though, there
is plenty you can do to help it. |
| |
Remember
that if you are washing dry skin, always use warm water
rather than hot water that may remove essential oils
from your skin. Moisturize liberally while the skin
is still damp to get maximum effect as well. Additionally,
wash your hair and scalp with a moisturizing shampoo
and warm water.
You should also use a moisturizing conditioner for full
treatment. However, you should also keep in mind that
if treatment at home is ineffective, there may be a
greater problem that needs to be addressed. That is
when it is time to call your doctor to find out if alternative
treatment is needed. With all of that in mind, you are
ready to tackle the problem of and eliminate your dry
skin. |
