Dry Skin – Nature Or Nurture?
by Louise Forrest

Is dry skin hereditary or is it a factor of your environment? The answer lies within you. Chances are if your whole family suffers from dry skin and you live in a humid climate then it’s hereditary. The other side of the coin is, if you live in a dry climate and have dry skin, but when you go on vacation to a humid climate and your skin comes alive with all the moisture, its probably environmental. There are several ways to deal with dry skin once you know what causes it. Below are a few tips in figuring out your dry skin.

Dry skin that is a result of a dry environment:
We cannot always change our environment, but we can buy products to prevent the damaging effects of a dry environment. There are many products on the market for those who have dry skin. You might find it necessary to have two different types of products for the different seasons. Oatmeal is a great base for products dealing in dry skin. Organic products that are for dry skin is another avenue to explore.

A dry environment steals the moisture from any skin, especially a naturally dry skin. During the winter you may find your skin is dry, flaky, and horrible to look at. Using a product for dry skin may not help if you use it once a week or even once a day. Skin that has no moisture needs to be replenished frequently. Oil based products do not always work for the severe dry skin, most of the time the oil refuses to skin into the skin because it is the wrong type of moisture.

Have you ever gotten out of the shower and tried to apply creams and lotions to find your skin will not take in the moisture, but two hours later your skin is dry?

Many people find this. While your pores are opened because of the showers heat the soap and water you have used has provided moisture to the skin. If you suffer from dry skin or a dry environment the moisture from the shower is quickly absorbed therefore leaving you with the appearance of dry skin.

If you wait a half hour or an hour after a shower or bath to apply the lotion you will find your skin more receptive to the added moisture. You also need to apply these products every day. Those who have severely dry skin may need to apply the lotions twice a day. This is one reason knowing your skin is important.

Is your skin dry no matter your environment?
You may have hereditary dry skin or a skin disease. Dry skin can be a disease. Those who have dry, flaky, and scaly skin may need a dermatologist to prescribe treatment. Some products on the shelf will help with this, but most often a deeper treatment is needed.

Dry skin is not a laughing matter. It makes you itchy, uncomfortable, and detracts from your appearance. Knowing your skin will help you determine the products that can help you prevent most kinds of dry skin. If you suffer from a skin disease chances are good you need a little more than the shelf has to offer.

The best way to find out what will help your skin or what is causing your dry skin is to seek a dermatologist. Sometimes their cures will not work either, but do not give up. There are products for everyone out there you just have to be patient in finding them. Using several methods for dry skin may be the only way to overcome the problem.
