Just How Serious Can Dry Skin Be?
by Louise Forrest

There are times when dry skin is nothing more than dryness on the skin and when you touch it the skin feels a little rough to the fingers. And all that is needed to fix this is to make sure that you are using a good moisturizer for your face.

But for some people they can apply a moisturizer and lotion literally every hour and there are no actual positive effects. Yet there are people who just ignore the fact that they have dry skin and nothing else serious happens.

But how can you tell if your dry skin is going to become a major issue? Will there be a time that you actually may need to seek the advice from your doctor or even go to hospital for treatment?

Of course there are certain factors that are going to put you at risk whether you like it or not. For instance women are more likely to suffer from dry skin more than men. This is because women tend to wear foundation that contains talc and this has the effect of drying the skin.

Also, your age is a factor too, as it seems that the older you become, the drier your skin becomes too.

As well as other things that slow down with age, the amount of sebum or natural oils that your skin will produce will also slow down. If you love the sun, then if you have dry skin, then you may will end up paying a price for the thing that you love. What the sun will do is essentially soak up any moisture that is locked away in your skin, and so your skin will become drier than what it is already.

Then there are social activities such as drinking and smoking. Your addictions can take a toll on your skin and if you take part in such activities excessively then both your inside and outside of your bodies will show the signs.

For some people there are times when all the self help techniques will not actually deliver any real benefits. If you are itching in the night when you are trying to sleep, you will need to seek professional help from your doctor. He or she will be able to make a complete diagnosis and will be able to look for any skin that is peeling away or that is very scaly.

In which case you may be referred to the hospital to see a skin specialist.
