Important Information for Everyone with Dry Skin
by Louise Forrest

There are a number of different skin conditions in the world today and one of those conditions is known as dry skin. Dry skin is very rarely a serious illness, but at the same time it can be an illness that you are aware of at all times during the day. This is because dry skin is usually accompanied by something like frequent itching, the development of flaky skin and a number of other unpleasant symptoms that can be extremely irritating but not life threatening.

If you are interested in learning about dry skin, then there are a number of sources that you can visit. Below, you will get some information that relates to the causes, self care and treatment of dry skin so that you will be ahead of the learning curve when it comes to taking care of yourself and keeping yourself healthy. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and if you take that dictum to heart then you will have a much better time later on down the road.

Causes

When it comes to causes, pinning down exactly what might be causing your dry skin symptoms is by no means an easy thing to do. However, it is certainly possible to narrow the list down from the following things that are frequently causes of dry skin and its related symptoms. Firstly, it is quite possible for dry skin to be a genetic condition that you inherit from a particular parent. Secondly, it is also possible for it to be the result of lifestyle choices that you make such as the weather where you live, your use of humidity reducing air conditioning units, frequent use of hot showers and frequent use of either alcohol or drugs. Lastly, it can also be related to things that might happen to you in life such as a psoriasis disorder or problems with your thyroid gland.

How to Care for the Skin

If you are really interested in keeping a dry skin condition in check, then there are a number of things that you could do at home that would make a big difference in keeping symptoms low. Firstly, if you happen to use hot water for your showers, change that to warm water and switch to an easier lathering soap. Both of these things will serve to maintain moisture within the skin and if you combine them with daily use of moisturizing lotion then you should see noticeable results within just a few days of starting that routine. Additionally, choosing fabrics that are nicer for dry skin (cotton and silk for example) will also help you keep the symptoms of the condition in check.

Dieting and Herbal Treatments

As is the case with most skin conditions, the key to getting your skin under control in terms of dieting is to simply choose the healthiest choices that you can. For example, if you maintain a diet that is high in protein but at the same time happens to cut down on your sugar consumption, then your skin will be healthier for it. Additionally, the consumption of green and leafy vegetables such as lettuce and celery will also mean better things for your skin in the long term.

For the most part, you should not need to go beyond lifestyle changes in the way you keep yourself clean and the way you eat in order to see a dramatic effect on your dry skin condition. However, if you would like to go that extra mile in getting things done then the use of skin ointments and lotions that are herbal based and readily available in your local pharmacy certainly would not hurt your chances of getting the symptoms under control. There are a few herbs such as Aloe that are very good for skin and a number of ointments available that have Aloe as a base.
