Are You Damaging Your Hair?
by Louise Forrest

Hair that is dry and damaged is frustrating for just about anyone. One of the consequences of hair that is damaged is that it must be cut off to allow new hair to grow, as you just cannot restore hair that has been damaged.

With all the false promises about products for damaged hair all that you can really do is to improve how it looks. But this is part of the process of getting rid of any damaged hair in the mean time.

Just before you do cut off your hair and grow it again into a healthy state, you need to be aware of the factors that can lead to damaged hair so that you do not repeat the process again, as this will prove to be a painful experience if you need to cut out your hair once again.

The main factor that leads to damaged hair is the use of the various hair styling products and all the chemicals that they contain. This is not to say that you cannot and should not use such products, but you need to ensure that what you do apply is only minimal and never excessive.

Other factors are if you colour or straighten your hair using tools, then apply a lot of heat to the hair. These are all factors that can damage your hair. You need never apply such heat to your skin, as it would burn, so why treat your hair in such a manner?

You should also talk to your stylist if you are having your hair coloured to ask what is in the colouring and what possible effects this could have to your hair in both the short and long term.

You need to do this as colouring is no more than a bleaching process which if not done correctly can be very damaging and emotionally upsetting. If you want to have some colour consider highlights as these do not affect every hair on your head.

What you need to be avoiding is to be constantly bleaching your hair or to constantly be straightening your hair, as this is just creating a vicious circle of damage to the hair and to the hair follicle also. This combined with styling products, harsh shampoos and pollution is a trigger for damaged hair.

Here are some steps that you should take in order to prevent any damage to the hair

- do not blow dry your hair
- use natural shampoos only
- use a natural conditioner only
- eat a good well balanced diet and drink plenty of water
- avoid over brushing your hair

You are now aware of the steps that you need to take in order to prevent damage to your hair.

Here are some techniques for you to treat your damaged hair

-
use a natural conditioner to conditioner the ends of your hair and your scalp
-
use a light oil spray to hold your hairstyle rather than a sticky gel or alcohol based hair spray.
