Does Dandruff Annoy You?
by Louise Forrest

Just how many commercials have you seen from companies that all claim that their dandruff shampoo is the answer to all your problems? You may think that people who do suffer from dandruff do not take proper care of themselves when it comes to personal hygiene. If you do have dandruff you may be tiring a range of products and treatments to help rid you of dandruff, but you should always remember that dandruff is not caused by a lack of personal hygiene. So then just what are those white flakes that appear?

At some point nearly everyone suffers from what is known as dandruff, which is nothing more than dry skin that has flaked away from the scalp, and it is normally noticed on the collars as this is where it tends to fall. There are a range of reasons as to why a person may develop dandruff but you should always consult a doctor to get the best possible advice. Such conditions that can be a result of your dandruff could be psoriasis of the scalp.

In simple terms dandruff is no more than your scalp removing dead skin cells much faster than normal. Such flakes can be seen within the hair and generally appearing at the top of the head. Because skin cells have the ability to renew themselves very often your scalp is actually removing dead skin cells all the time.

But it seems strange that the rest of the dead skin cells that are removed from the rest of your body seem to be done magically, it is a wonder why this is not the case with the scalp. If the scalp did not remove dead skin cells, then this part of the head would become very think, and if the skin produces too many new skin cells, then this too can create problems. And it is this shedding of the skin from the scalp that is commonly known as dandruff.

You may actually think that the shedding of the skin from the scalp is a result of the scalp being too dry. This is actually the opposite and it has been shown that people with oily skin can generally suffer more from dandruff. This is due to the fact that the excess oiliness acts as a glue which in turn sticks the dead skin cells together and often resulting in large clogs of skin being removed from the scalp.

It should also be noted that men generally suffer more from dandruff than women so it can be suggested that male hormones can also play a role in the development of dandruff.
If you are suffering from oily skin then you should be using products that dry out the skin or the scalp. Natural shampoo based products are better as they do not contain any chemicals and are much kinder to the scalp. You may also want to consider the use of a natural hair conditioner to further moisturise the scalp.

Taking simple steps such as using a specific natural shampoo for dandruff should always be considered but if your condition is a result of psoriasis of the scalp for instance, then you need to consult a doctor or specialist.
