Children With Dandruff
by Louise Forrest

A common scalp problem that leads to itching and flakes being formed is commonly known as dandruff, and is generally found in adults. But what about children and what products should you use should you child suffer from dandruff?

Children can also develop dandruff and many parents just do not know what steps to take. This article will provide guidance on the appropriate action to take if your child has dandruff.

Dandruff really affects adults and teenagers, but children and babies even can also experience this irritating condition. You will be able to detect if your child has dandruff as they will be constantly be scratching their head and any white flakes will be visible. But you need to be sure that it is dandruff and not head lice – it is important not too mix up the two.

Parents make think that their child has developed dandruff if they have not washed the shampoo out carefully enough when they do it themselves. In order to ensure this is not happening, there should be adult supervision or the parent should wash the child’s hair and then rinse it properly.

There is also a suggestion that a fungus is also possible for the development of dandruff which makes the cells of the scalp grow much faster than normal. This is true and there are anti-fungal treatments to help with this.

But there are other conditions as well as head lice and dandruff which can lead to the scalp becoming very itchy. Such as dermatitis and even ringworm. Your best option will to be to visit your family doctor in order to get a correct diagnosis and therefore be able to take the appropriate course of action.

Just like adults who have dandruff can be treated so too can children, but you need to be using a much milder shampoo and the scalp of most babies and children is more sensitive than that of adults. Washing with a good mild shampoo will help to remove any excess oil, but at the same time is mild enough to retain the scalps own natural oils.

You need should also encourage your child not to use any hair care products such as hair sprays or gels, and this can also lead to dandruff or cause the problem to become worse if they already are suffering from the condition. This is because hair products do nothing other than clog up the hair and can potentially cause more lumps to appear than dandruff alone does.

What is needed is a good healthy diet and this is the best way to help treat and also prevent dandruff in many children. But you need to ensure that junk foods and sweets are avoided as possible. You should ensure that your children are getting lots of outdoor physical exercise.

Also sunshine is very important for the skin and also the scalp but remember to protect your children from the sun especially during the hot summer months.

Generally speaking, dandruff is common to both children and adults but there are products designed for both groups in helping to treat and cure dandruff. Regardless of the age, dandruff is not a nice condition to be suffering from, so make sure that you notice and treat it as early as possible.
