The Causes and the Prevention of Muscle Pain
by Louise Forrest

At some time in your life, you are bound to develop some form of muscle pain. It can be extremely painful, it can take ages to go away, and often there is no warning that it is going to appear. So just what causes muscle pain, and can it be prevented?

Muscle Pain and Its Many Causes
Muscle pain can occur in any part of the body, and usually it occurs through over exercise, or injury. However, they can also ache when the body is feeling a little under the weather, or through various illnesses.

Muscle pain is by far one of the most common body conditions, and as mentioned earlier, every single person will be affected by it at some time in their lives. So what are the main causes then?

Exercise
Whilst regular exercise is good for the body and it provides many different benefits, if you do not take the right approach to it, you could end up with various different muscle pains.

The most common muscle pain caused by exercise is due to not warming up or warming down well enough. It is important for the body to warm up first; otherwise there is a serious risk of pulling a muscle or causing injury. The muscles need to be gradually warmed up slowly, as any quick movement could cause them to seize up and cause you to be in extreme pain!

It is even possible to tear muscles when you do not exercise properly, so you really do have to be careful!

Injury
Many people pull muscles or hurt them during an injury such as falling over, spraining the ankle, and sometimes even just knocking the muscle can cause it to ache for a few days.

Illness
Our health can seriously affect the whole of our body, and muscle pains are often a symptom of ill health. Muscle ache could occur when we are feeling a little under the weather and generally run down or it could be a sign of a more serious illness. If you do notice that your muscles ache for longer than a few days, it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible just to be sure that it is nothing serious.

Some muscle pain can be a sign of arthritis so you really should get it checked out as soon as possible.

Treatment for Muscle Pain
The best treatment for most muscle pain is plenty of rest. The more you rest them, the more chance they have of recovering. If you keep on using the muscle daily, it could cause further damage and so it is always better to rest it!

There are also various creams and lotions especially designed to soothe muscle pain, so if you do end up still having to go to work, these creams really can help to get you through the day. Simply rub them over the sore area, and they will usually produce heat which soothes the muscles. You can buy these creams and lotions over the counter at your local drugstore and they are usually fairly inexpensive too.

The best thing you can do is to prevent the muscle pain from occurring in the first place. Now that is impossible for pain that is related to illness, however it can be prevented through exercise. Always make sure that you warm up and down properly, and that you do not overdo it.

Go at your own pace and do not push yourself if you cannot do any more. You really have to listen to your body; otherwise you will end up with severe pain and not being able to do anything for a few days!
