What Is Acne?
by Louise Forrest

Acne is the medical term for the pimples found on the face of many people. This occurs most often in teenagers and those in their mid 40's.

Hormonal changes in the body can trigger acne. When going through this hormonal change, the body sends a signal to its immune system saying there is something wrong with the skin and as a result the body's immune system activates and rushes to defend the breach. At the same time, the skin responds by sending white blood cells to the area and the glands that produce oil goes into overdrive and sends an excess of oil to the skins surface.

When the white blood cells and excess oil reach the area where the breach supposedly occurred the skin will absorb the some of the excess oil and white blood cells while the remainder is released to the surface of the skin where it then evaporates. The small amount of oil that remains on the surface of the skin will then solidify and form into, what we know, as acne.

Acne is usually short lived, disappearing usually in about ten days, although it can take longer, as the hormonal activity stabilizes. During this period of hormonal activity, especially in teenagers and the older people, this causes some emotional distress which doesn't help the situation.

During the teen years, the excess hormonal activity is key to increasing the natural affinity towards the opposite sex. At the same time, members of the opposite sex are going through a similar excess of hormonal activity. When acne occurs, it causes a certain amount of emotional stress on both genders due to the fact that during this period of time, the desire to look good and be attractive to the opposite gender is very strong. During this time, teens tend to be a bit boisterous and use words and phrases that may cause some emotional trauma to one suffering from acne. This age group is very conscious about how they look, so an outbreak of acne is a big problem for them. They often wonder about things such as how they will ever get a date when they have pimples on their face and other similar things.

Older people are still worried about how they appear, so the appearance of acne in later years causes a certain amount of emotional distress. This age group has the advantage of being more mature and experienced. Even with that maturity and experience, the drive to look beautiful or attractive to the opposite sex is still strong. Most of the time, acne appears during the post menstrual phase of life.

There are a variety of ways you can fight acne. Younger people are impatient, and the older people tend to look at acne with a degree of suspicion, wondering why it's happening now, so long after the teen years. With their age and maturity they may also wonder if it's a sign of something more serious happening with in their body.

Acne can be treated with a daily cleansing ritual consisting of regular skin cleansing with warm water, using a soft soap with a moisturizer at least twice daily. If the acne is stubborn and persists for a longer period of time and results in emotional trauma that is not relieved by studying about acne, then it's recommended that you visit a dermatologist or your medical professional.
