Facts About Acne Dysmorphia |
| by Louise Forrest |
| |
This
is a very rare form of acne but it can happen. This
is actually a mental illness and is similar to Anorexia
Nervosa.
Suffers of this type of acne are constantly unhappy
with the appearance of their skin. They think that
even if they have only very mild acne that the condition
is actually worse than it really is. People will often
just lock themselves away and have no social contact
with anyone. This is a serious illness and patients
do need help.
If you are suffering from this type of acne you are
not likely to seek any kind of harm but are more than
likely to inflict some harm upon yourself. You may
pick away at the skin that you are not happy with
and this will cause it to break and to also bleed.
This is clearly not a very nice condition to have
and yet there is very little information about it
and how to help people who may be suffering from it.
One way to tell if someone that you know is suffering
is if they don’t even have acne yet they have
managed to convince themselves that they have terrible
skin to look at. As mentioned already, a lot of patients
even with only mild acne seem to think that the condition
of their skin is much worse than it actually is.
Such people are obsessed with having skin that is
flawless that they will pick away at it until is bleeds
and if this happens there is a possibility of infection
taking place within the skin.
You might be disgusted with your skin but you will
find that you are constantly looking in the mirror
to see if the condition has gone or even got worse.
These are just some of the questions that are constantly
running around in the mind of the sufferer and this
can make it very hard for them to just ignore their
skin and to live a life that is normal.
As well as the constant obsession people are also
suffering from depression, and regardless of how ugly
your skin may look, help is always available.
The way to treat this condition is to undertake Cognitive
Behavioral therapy. Given that there is no real acne
to heal or treat any medications that can be obtained
are not really going to help because the patient is
something far worse than it really is, and so they
will never be satisfied with what any creams will
do for the skin.
So what needs to be treated is the actual obsession
itself, and when this is done the symptoms usually
decrease a great deal. You will be able to tackle
any negative thoughts and be able to manage without
feeling sad or depressed about your appearance. |
