Causes of Acne: Urban Legend or Fact? |
|
| by Louise Forrest |
| |
One of
the most frustrating aspects of having acne and trying
to figure out how to cure it is figuring out the underlying
cause. Even today, the scientific community is at odds
when it comes to trying to determine what causes acne
outbreaks and how they can be prevented in EVERYONE.
It’s true that over the counter acne creams and
even prescription medications work for some people,
or even most people, but they don’t work for everyone
and if you are one of those unlucky folks who is still
in need of a proper cure for your acne, it can be depressing,
frustrating, and in some extreme cases, even suicide
inducing.
So, what really does cause acne outbreaks in the average
teenager and adult? The most important thing to remember
is that these causes vary from case to case. The only
“sure thing” that can really be pinpointed
is that the more oil you have sitting on your skin,
the more likely you’ll be to get acne. |

Diet:
What you eat on a daily basis can go a long way
in how healthy your skin is. But even if you were
to switch to an all vegan diet with no refined
sugars or other traditionally bad triggers, you
can still end up with acne-ridden skin. It is
true that some stereotypical triggers, such as
chocolate, fatty foods or sugars do cause outbreaks
in some people, but in others, they may be completely
neutral.
The best way to figure out what foods cause your
skin to break out is with trial and error. And
be sure that you aren’t experiencing an
allergic reaction to a food, and you mistake it
for acne. Some reactions can cause small, red
bumps and irritations on the skin that look a
surprisingly lot like acne. |

Activity:
Some people swear that when they sit on the couch
the whole day or are in front of the computer,
the next day, they wake up with more pimples then
they had before. While others believe there is
a link between sun exposure, exercise and perspiration
and acne breakouts. The truth is that you could
both be right. Inactivity linked with bad personal
hygiene can most definitely cause a breakout.
Many folks, especially teenage boys, might not
consider showering or scrubbing their face if
they don’t plan on leaving the house on
a lazy Saturday afternoon.
This build up of oil on the face and body is the
perfect stew for pimple formation. For those that
are active and might perspire, showers and good
personal hygiene is just as important. The build
up of sweat and oils in your pores after a workout
can lead to breakouts if the gunk isn’t
washed away as soon as your done. |

Make
up: One of the most unsuspecting causes of breakouts
is the kind of makeup you use every day. Many
make ups, especially base, can clog your pores
and lead to pimples within a day or two. These
cases are especially common since most girls and
women put their makeup on in the beginning of
the day, go through their entire day and then
scrub it off at night. That time lapse can end
up being a perfect breeding ground for pimples
to form. |

Cleaning
TOO often: For those that have become a bit paranoid
about the cleanliness of their face and body,
you could actually be doing more harm then good.
By irritating your skin to the point where it
becomes unhealthy by cleaning too much, you are
setting up a perfect situation for pores to become
clogged and pimples to take over. Staying clean
is vital, but you don’t need to over do
it. |
