| Ayurveda as an Acne Treatment Regimen |
| by Louise Forrest |

Teenagers
and adults dread the presence of acne in their facial
areas. Before, there was a belief that the skin problem
is exclusive to teenagers. But through the years, it
has been proven that even adults could readily contract
the skin condition. Thus, there has always been a need
for an effective acne treatment. There are already numerous
acne medications and countless skincare and beauty products
that claim to contain substances and elements that lead
to curtailment and prevention of acne. Some of those
treatments and products actually work, while several
others are just as futile as many other acne treatments
that have become obsolete in the market.
As people search for different ways on how acne can
be treated, there are now many alternative measures
on how to do the act. One of the most interesting
and promising is Ayurveda. This ancient system of
lifestyle was popular in India in the old times and
is popularly becoming a lifestyle that is being adopted
by a greater number of people. Aurveda is a complementary
and non-invasive means of living life. The lifestyle
revolves around balances in the Vata (nervous system/air),
Kapha (nutrients and lubrication in the arteries/
water) and Pitta (Metabolism and overall digestion/
fire). The principle states that the human body is
made of these three ‘doshas’.
Thus, understanding the dohas well would lead to
better understanding of acne outbreak. The Ayurvedic
principle explains acne as a result of aggravation
of the body’s Pitta, which is more common in
teenagers. This aggravation eventually would affect
the other two doshas, leading to secretion of more
oil from the face’s oil glands. This explanation
is greatly confided in Ayurveda.
Thus, there is a pressing need to balance all three
doshas in the body. To do this more effectively, there
is an abrupt necessity to balance diet and the overall
quality of life. The explanation simply states that
patients should focus well on good lifestyle. Ayurveda
practitioners would recommend having good nutrition.
Watch your diet and avoid foods that are known to
further trigger secretion of excessive oil from the
glands. Foods rich in fats are highly not recommended.
Ayurveda would also advise against lacking enough
sleep. You all know that lack of rest and sleep would
normally result to poor quality of skin. That is because
without enough sleep, skin quality is altered and
is deteriorated. Aside from that, stress should be
significantly reduced, if not totally eliminated.
Stress affects the good flow of blood in blood vessels,
eventually affecting the good quality of the skin.
There are also native Indian herbs that are recommended
to be applied to the acne-infected skin. Neem is one
of them. Neem is considered sacred in India, containing
properties that are good for the health. It is antibacterial
and antifungal that is now manufactured and distributed
in powder and oil forms. Aloe vera is also recommended
to be applied on acne infected skin. Aloe vera has
a cooling characteristic that reduces inflammation
in the skin, as caused by acne.
Overall, Ayuerveda equates for a good and healthy
lifestyle. If people would only live a good and healthy
way of life, they would not be bothered about problems
like acne and other skin infections. |
