How Do You Care For Your Skin?
by Louise Forrest

Who can forget the fairy tale beauty Rapunzel, for she had the most beautiful and longest tresses ever. Hair care is however not limited to women for men too are extremely conscious about styling and keeping their hair healthy and bouncy. Is it any surprise then that hair care is a billion dollar industry today with new hair care products, hairdos and stylists being churned out every other day. However, following few basics can help you to better maintain and improve the health and look of your hair.

1.
Understanding your hair – The hair care needs of a person varies with the type of hair and hair conditions he/she has. Find out if it is oily, dry, normal and shiny, or a combination type (oily at the crown but dry towards the tips). Also assess if you have any hair conditions such as dandruff, hair fall etc. This will help you choose the right hair care routine and products for your hair.
2. Dealing with hair conditions
a.
Oily hair – More common in adolescence when the sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil. Take care to choose hair products suited for oily hair.
b. Dandruff
Use shampoos containing salicylic acid, zinc, tars, or selenium sulfide
Scrub your hair with your fingers for at least 5 minutes while shampooing in order to loosen the flakes
Properly rinse your hair
See a doctor in case of extreme dandruff conditions that do not improve with the above methods, as he will be able to prescribe a special hair shampoo and liquid for your scalp
c.
Hair Breakage, split ends – May occur due to excessive chemical treatments, hypothyroidism, wrong combing methods, poor nutrition, hair extensions, sun exposure etc. In whichever case it is best to see a doctor and/or hair specialist for advice.
d.
Hair Loss – It is a common occurrence and often replaced by new hair. Again may be due to due to excessive chemical treatments, hypothyroidism, wrong combing methods, poor nutrition, pregnancy, sun exposure etc. Sometimes the hair is not replaced and baldness seeps in. Try a different hairstyle or hair treatments in such a case. Meet a doctor for medical advice on how to delay or stop the hair loss.
e.
Graying – Most often an unavoidable part of the natural ageing process except in certain cases of malnutrition or genetic abnormality. Based on the health of your hair and the hair type, the hair specialist will suggest an appropriate chemical for dyeing.
3. Choosing the right hair care products
Use hair care products that suit your hair type
Use hair care products having sunscreen to protect the hair from damage due to sun exposure
4.
Trimming your hair – Get routine hair cuts to prevent the formation of split ends
5. Shampooing – Shampoo only once a week as daily use of shampoos can cause your hair to lose its moisture and become dry
6.
Drying hair – Blow dry the wet hair, without using extreme heats though
7.
Styling the hair - Don’t subject your hair to excessive heat and stress
8.
Combing the hair - Use a wide-toothed comb when your hair is wet and do not apply too much stress as it can cause breakage
9.
Proper nutrition - Eat leafy vegetables and fruits and take multivitamins to improve your general health which in turn will have a positive effect on the texture and look of your hair
10. Coloring the hair –
Since both perms and coloring require chemicals, choose either one so that you don’t subject your hair to too much chemicals
While choosing a color, ensure that the chemicals used are the least damaging for your hair, and the color suits you hair style and looks
11. Approaching professionals – Always approach
A professional beautician or hair stylist for your hair styling needs such as perming, coloring etc
A doctor to deal with specific hair conditions you may be facing such as dandruff, excessive hair fall etc
